Senior Instructional Designer
Remote (United States)
Job Details
Department: Operations
Employment Type: Full Time
Compensation: $70,000–$90,000 per year.
Position Overview
The Senior Instructional Designer will create training programs, standard operating procedures, and operational documentation from the ground up. Working closely with operational teams, this role partners directly with subject matter experts to uncover undocumented processes, organize institutional knowledge, design effective curricula, and transform complex workflows into clear, structured learning materials.
This position is responsible for developing e-learning content, facilitator guides, assessments, SOPs, and other process documentation across multiple teams. Much of the existing knowledge may currently be captured only through informal notes, recordings, or the experience of individual team members, requiring the ability to independently gather that information and turn it into accurate, scalable training resources.
This is a hands-on builder role with significant ownership of the training materials and documentation used to onboard new employees, develop existing team members, support cross-training, and help the organization scale effectively.
What You’ll Do
Content Development & Instructional Design
- Create training materials, SOPs, and workflow documentation from the ground up for multiple operational teams with different processes, responsibilities, and skill requirements.
- Design organized learning paths that present material in a logical sequence for new-hire onboarding, cross-training, and continued skill development.
- Develop clear and engaging instructional materials that turn complex, multi-step processes into accessible learning experiences designed to improve understanding and retention.
- Create reusable templates, guidelines, and content standards that allow future content contributors across the organization to develop materials consistently.
Process Documentation & SME Collaboration
- Lead structured interviews, discovery sessions, and working meetings with subject matter experts and team managers to capture, verify, and document operational workflows.
- Observe and map processes that currently rely heavily on undocumented institutional knowledge, converting day-to-day practices into structured and teachable content.
- Work with leadership and team managers to identify training needs, prioritize content development, and confirm the accuracy of documented procedures.
- Translate detailed operational processes into organized documentation that can function both as instructional material and as an ongoing reference resource.
Training Program Management
- Own the overall training content architecture, including how materials are structured, categorized, organized, and sequenced across different roles and teams.
- Develop content governance standards covering version control, review schedules, update triggers, and clearly assigned content ownership.
- Establish and manage a consistent content maintenance process so SOPs and training resources remain aligned with changing operational procedures.
- Provide leadership with regular updates on development progress, training coverage, outstanding content needs, and identified knowledge gaps.
Continuous Improvement
- Support process improvement efforts by revising training materials and operational documentation whenever workflows are updated or refined.
- Identify areas where stronger documentation or more effective instructional design could improve operational performance.
- Create feedback loops with operational teams to determine where training materials are not meeting employee needs and continuously improve the content based on that feedback.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Organizational Development, Communications, or a related field, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
- At least 5 years of experience in instructional design, curriculum development, or learning and development content creation, including a minimum of 2 years focused specifically on operational or process-based training.
- A demonstrated portfolio showing training programs, SOPs, curricula, or similar learning resources created from the ground up in environments where formal documentation previously did not exist.
- Experience supporting complex, multi-department operations with more than 50 employees across separate teams that have distinct workflows and training requirements.
- Proven experience leading knowledge-extraction sessions with subject matter experts, including planning interviews, validating process details, and converting verbal or undocumented knowledge into structured, published training content.
- Experience designing training platforms from end to end, including information architecture, role-based learning paths, content organization, categorization, and user navigation.
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to convert highly technical and multi-step operational procedures into clear, accessible training materials for learners with varying levels of experience.
- Experience creating and maintaining content review and update cycles connected to operational changes so training materials remain consistent with current processes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience using Trainual or comparable SOP and training platforms such as Lessonly, Guru, Confluence, or Notion.
- Experience developing training infrastructure for organizations going through rapid expansion or operational scaling, including environments experiencing 2x or greater headcount growth.
- Experience working in operations-intensive environments with complex, multi-step, compliance-sensitive workflows where accuracy is critical.
- Experience incorporating multimedia resources such as Loom recordings, screen captures, and embedded video into structured training modules.
- Experience working in remote-first or distributed organizations with teams operating across multiple time zones.
- Comfort working across multiple operational systems, including project management tools, CRM platforms, and communication systems, and documenting how those systems connect within broader workflows.
- Experience developing train-the-trainer programs or enabling managers and other internal stakeholders to contribute content within an established training framework.
