About the Role

This opportunity is for a Senior Backend Engineer to architect and build complex, production-grade financial systems supporting payment processing, fraud detection, compliance, and user management. The role focuses on designing cross-domain backend solutions across a distributed microservices architecture while improving system reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability.

The position requires strong systems engineering expertise with Python, APIs, SQL and NoSQL databases, event-driven architectures, cloud infrastructure, and modern architecture patterns. The engineer will also lead technical decisions, establish engineering practices, mentor junior engineers, and work with product and compliance stakeholders on systems operating under strict financial and regulatory requirements.

What You'll Do

• Architect and implement financial systems for payment processing, fraud detection, and compliance workflows operating under strict regulatory requirements.
• Design cross-domain solutions that coordinate interactions among payments, fraud detection, user management, and compliance systems.
• Lead architecture and technical decisions that affect the broader platform and establish scalable engineering best practices.
• Mentor junior engineers and help establish coding standards, design patterns, and engineering practices.
• Improve reliability and performance across a distributed microservices architecture.
• Collaborate with product and compliance teams to design systems that meet business and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

Required Experience

• 5+ years of software engineering experience building complex production systems.
• Demonstrated systems engineering experience solving complex, cross-domain technical challenges.
• Experience designing and working with distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and microservices.

Required Skills

• Strong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and core computer science principles.
• Strong backend development skills using Python, including Python 3, web frameworks, and APIs.
• Experience designing and working with both SQL and NoSQL databases.
• Experience with Google Cloud Platform or comparable cloud infrastructure platforms.
• Understanding of architecture patterns including domain-driven design, clean architecture, and CQRS.
• Ability to design systems that balance performance, maintainability, scalability, and business requirements.
• Ability and willingness to travel up to approximately 15% annually.

Education & Certifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Computer Science or Engineering from an accredited university.
• Experience with payment processing, fraud detection, or financial compliance systems.
• Understanding of financial regulations and frameworks such as AML, KYC, and PCI DSS.
• Experience integrating with financial APIs, banking systems, or money movement platforms.
• Experience building or supporting high-scale systems that process high transaction volumes.
• Experience coordinating multiple third-party service integrations.
