About the Role
The Communications Associate – Media, Content & Campaigns supports media relations, storytelling, content development, and integrated communications campaigns. This role identifies compelling stories and media opportunities, develops high-quality external communications, supports earned media efforts, and coordinates campaigns across media, digital, email, web, and content channels.
The position works closely with program and communications teams as well as community leaders, partners, staff, journalists, and other external stakeholders. Key responsibilities include media outreach, journalist research, story development, campaign coordination, content creation, editorial quality, communications measurement, and maintaining consistent brand voice and messaging.
What You'll Do
Media Relations & Visibility- Support earned media strategies designed to increase visibility for organizational priorities, programs, initiatives, and community leaders.
- Research journalists, media outlets, podcasts, and other media opportunities aligned with communications priorities.
- Develop and maintain targeted media lists across relevant issue areas and markets.
- Draft press releases, media advisories, pitches, statements, talking points, and other media materials.
- Conduct media outreach, pitching, follow-up, and interview coordination.
- Identify timely opportunities to connect organizational expertise and community perspectives with relevant public conversations.
- Help prepare staff and community leaders for media opportunities and interviews.
- Track media outreach, placements, and coverage.
- Proactively identify and develop stories that demonstrate organizational impact and elevate community leadership.
- Build and maintain a story bank covering programs, initiatives, and community networks.
- Interview community leaders, partners, participants, and staff to gather stories, quotes, testimonials, and supporting information.
- Draft and edit stories, articles, newsletters, website content, campaign materials, social media copy, and other external communications.
- Support the development of thought-leadership content, including op-eds, articles, speeches, and talking points.
- Identify opportunities to repurpose stories, research, media coverage, and other content across multiple communications channels.
- Support the execution of integrated communications campaigns across media, digital, email, web, and content channels.
- Develop campaign content and communications materials that align with established messaging and organizational priorities.
- Coordinate campaign timelines, content requirements, creative assets, approvals, and deliverables.
- Support communications for organizational events, reports, announcements, and major initiatives.
- Collaborate with digital communications colleagues to adapt and distribute campaign content across digital platforms.
- Coordinate with program and policy teams to gather stories, information, data, and visuals needed for communications initiatives.
- Manage assigned communications projects and deliverables while maintaining strong attention to deadlines and quality.
- Maintain organized media lists, story banks, campaign materials, and communications assets.
- Ensure communications materials consistently reflect established brand, voice, messaging, and editorial standards.
- Track media placements, storytelling outputs, campaign deliverables, and communications results.
- Support reporting on communications and campaign performance.
- Contribute to quarterly communications goals related to media relations, storytelling, content development, and campaign execution.
- Maintain accountability for assigned responsibilities, priorities, deadlines, and outcomes within the organization's established performance and accountability framework.
Qualifications
Required Experience
- 2–4+ years of professional experience in communications, public relations, journalism, nonprofit communications, advocacy communications, marketing, or a closely related field.
- Experience developing communications materials such as press releases, pitches, articles, newsletters, website content, social media copy, or talking points.
- Experience with media relations, including media research, pitching, journalist outreach, and/or media monitoring.
Required Skills
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to develop effective content for multiple audiences and platforms.
- Strong project management and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple deadlines, projects, and deliverables.
- Ability to proactively identify compelling stories, media opportunities, and communications opportunities.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with community leaders, partners, staff, journalists, and external stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, collaborative, fully remote environment.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, English, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of the media landscape and narrative opportunities affecting Latino communities.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is strongly preferred.
