Data Engineering Manager

About the Role
This opportunity is for a Data Engineering Manager who can combine strong hands-on engineering ability with people leadership. The role can be based in San Francisco or performed remotely from the United States or Canada. This position is best suited for an experienced data engineering leader who can build reliable data pipelines, guide engineering best practices, support data strategy, and help individual Data Engineers grow and succeed.
Employment Type: Full Time
Compensation: $172,000 - $254,000 per year, including salary and equity
What You’ll Do
- Collaborate with product managers, data analysts, and machine learning engineers to develop data pipelines and ETL tasks that support insight generation.
- Build and improve data architecture processes and practices that can be scheduled, automated, replicated, and used as standards by other teams.
- Help shape data team strategy by working with product leaders, managers, and data leadership.
- Actively participate in the execution and planning of broader organizational data team strategy.
- Work with data leadership to support alignment and success across the full data organization.
- Manage individual Data Engineers and support their learning, professional growth, and long-term success.
- Balance hands-on technical contribution with coaching, mentoring, and team leadership responsibilities.
- Lead projects from idea generation through planning, execution, and delivery.
Qualifications
- At least 5 years of industry experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar engineering-focused data role.
- Strong engineering foundation with a focus on high code quality and the ability to guide others toward strong technical standards.
- Expert-level Python skills.
- Strong SQL fluency.
- Experience developing maintainable data pipelines using Python and SQL.
- Experience creating automated testing and applying design patterns.
- Strong understanding of engineering best practices.
- Experience managing 3 or more people, including accountability for their growth and success as individuals and team members.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to operate as a player-coach, contributing individually while also managing and mentoring others.
- Experience leading projects end to end, from idea generation and planning through execution and delivery.
- Working knowledge of how ML and AI applications are deployed and monitored.
- Motivation to use ML and AI awareness to support data-driven initiatives.
