Remote (United States)
Job Details
Location: United States
Workplace: Remote
Employment Type: Full-Time
Experience: 4-8 years of professional software engineering experience
Core Areas: Full-stack development, Python, TypeScript, LLM applications, AI APIs, digital twins, backend services, scientific software
Compensation: $140,000-$200,000 per year
About the Role
This opportunity is for a Software Engineer focused on turning scientific and laboratory workflows into production software. The role spans full-stack application development, AI-powered internal tools, molecule discovery applications, and digital twins used to model chemical and biological production processes from laboratory development through manufacturing scale-up.
The position requires strong general-purpose programming skills in Python and/or TypeScript, end-to-end production software development, and experience building applications with LLMs and modern AI APIs. You will work directly with laboratory scientists and engineering partners to translate scientific problems into secure, reliable, auditable software used in a regulated environment.
What You'll Do
- Implement and extend AI tooling across the organization, taking LLM-powered workflows from prototypes to reliable, production-grade internal applications.
- Build AI workflows with human-in-the-loop review, logging, and auditability.
- Partner directly with laboratory scientists to develop applications that accelerate molecule discovery.
- Build tools for candidate screening, enzyme and pathway data exploration, and experiment planning.
- Develop digital twins of chemical and biological production processes to support simulation, optimization, and scale-up decisions from the laboratory through distributed manufacturing.
- Build full-stack internal applications end to end, including backend services, APIs, data access layers, and usable interfaces for technical and non-technical users.
- Integrate applications with existing systems and data platforms while following established engineering architecture and standards.
- Develop tested, documented, secure, and auditable software appropriate for a regulated industry.
Qualifications
Required Experience
- 4–8 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Experience shipping production software end to end.
- Experience supporting the full production software lifecycle, including development, deployment, and maintenance of performant, secure, and highly available applications.
- Experience building applications that consume LLMs and modern AI APIs, including retrieval, structured extraction, agentic workflows, or AI-assisted tooling.
- Experience collaborating with software developers through code reviews, shared codebases and infrastructure, and on-call incident response.
Required Skills
- Strong general-purpose programming skills using Python and/or TypeScript.
- Ability to build full-stack software across backend services, APIs, data access layers, and user-facing application interfaces.
- Ability to work with scientific or numerical data and translate domain-specific problems into practical software solutions.
- Ability to work directly with non-engineers by asking effective questions, rapidly prototyping solutions, and iterating based on real-world usage.
- Ability to develop production software with appropriate performance, availability, security, testing, documentation, and auditability.
Education
- Four-year undergraduate degree in Computer Science or Engineering.
- A science or engineering degree in another field may substitute when combined with 6–10 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with simulation, modeling, or digital twin development, including process modeling, physics-based modeling, or data-driven approaches.
- Exposure to chemistry, biology, or laboratory environments, including LIMS, instrument data, or scientific computing.
- Experience working in regulated industries or handling sensitive data.
- Experience selecting the tools, programming languages, libraries, and infrastructure required to deliver a working system.
Work Conditions & Eligibility
- This is a fully remote role open to candidates located anywhere in the United States.
- Candidates in the Seattle, San Diego, and Arlington/Washington, DC areas are preferred, but these locations are not required.
- The role involves access to data and systems subject to U.S. export control regulations, including ITAR.
- Candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, lawful permanent resident, or a protected individual as defined under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3).
- Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States.
Benefits
- Medical coverage with a range of plan options, including many plans fully covered for employees and dependents at no cost to the employee.
- 401(k) with employer matching of up to 4% of eligible compensation.
- Paid vacation and company holidays.
- Paid end-of-year shutdown.
