About the Role
This Senior Technical Writer opportunity focuses on owning and developing comprehensive technical documentation for an AI-powered cybersecurity platform. The position is responsible for the end-to-end documentation system, including integration guides, administrator and configuration documentation, API references, developer resources, release notes, and technical explanations of AI-driven security investigations. The primary objective is to produce accurate, accessible, and maintainable documentation that enables security operations professionals and platform administrators to configure, manage, and use complex software capabilities independently.
The role works directly with product management, engineering, customer success, and sales engineering throughout the product development lifecycle and reports to the Head of Product. Documentation must address enterprise and managed security service provider (MSSP) environments, security data integrations, multi-tenant administration, investigation strategies, AI-generated evidence, system limitations, and authorized response actions. The position requires hands-on technical investigation, strong editorial ownership, and a docs-as-code approach that supports engineering contributions and reliable documentation releases.
What You'll Do
- Own the complete customer-facing technical documentation platform, including information architecture, content organization, authoring workflows, editorial reviews, publishing processes, search functionality, and ongoing maintenance.
- Develop and maintain accurate, searchable, and accessible documentation that enables SOC analysts, security engineers, and platform administrators to complete technical tasks without relying on support tickets.
- Create comprehensive integration guides for supported security data sources and alert sources, establishing reusable templates that allow new integrations to be documented efficiently, with a target of completing documentation for a new integration within one day.
- Write administrator, configuration, and governance documentation for enterprise customers and managed security service providers (MSSPs), covering tenant management, multi-tenant deployments, access controls, API keys, audit trails, and response action authorization.
- Own and maintain API reference documentation and developer-facing technical content, collaborating with engineering to generate documentation directly from source code where practical and create manually authored explanations where necessary.
- Produce clear, customer-focused release notes describing product changes, their purpose, affected users, benefits, and known limitations. Ensure every customer-visible release includes accurate documentation at launch.
- Document how AI-powered security investigations are structured, how investigation and threat-hunting strategies are configured, and how automated security workflows operate.
- Develop explanatory technical content describing how AI-completed investigations present evidence, communicate uncertainty, support decision-making, and operate within defined capabilities and limitations.
- Explain configuration and governance requirements for determining which security response actions an AI-powered security operations system is authorized to perform.
- Work directly with engineers and product managers while features are being designed and developed to capture implementation details, clarify technical behavior, and identify discrepancies between specifications and actual functionality.
- Partner with customer success and technical support teams to identify documentation gaps that generate support tickets, prioritize improvements, and strengthen customer self-service capabilities.
- Establish and maintain a technical writing style guide, documentation standards, and docs-as-code workflows that enable engineers and product managers to contribute effectively without creating editorial bottlenecks.
- Maintain responsibility for documentation accuracy, usability, completeness, and consistency throughout the product lifecycle, including updates associated with new features, integrations, and releases.
- Use available documentation analytics, customer feedback, and support insights to evaluate documentation effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
Qualifications
Required Experience
- At least 5 years of professional technical writing experience documenting software products designed for technically sophisticated buyers and users.
- At least 2 years of experience documenting APIs, software integrations, or infrastructure-adjacent technology products.
- Demonstrated experience owning a technical documentation system from end to end, including information architecture, content development, publishing, maintenance, and continuous improvement.
- A portfolio demonstrating the ability to explain complex technical systems to practitioners who need precise, well-structured, actionable information under time constraints.
- Experience working directly with software engineers and product managers to gather technical information, clarify implementation details, and develop accurate product documentation.
- Experience contributing independently within small, accountable product teams, with direct responsibility for documentation quality and delivery.
Required Skills
- Strong technical writing and editing capabilities, including the ability to develop clear, concise, structured documentation for complex software features, technical workflows, and administrative procedures.
- Practical proficiency with docs-as-code methodologies, Git, Markdown, and at least one static documentation framework such as Docusaurus, MkDocs, Mintlify, or an equivalent platform.
- Ability to read and interpret source code and API specifications, document technical functionality accurately, and recognize discrepancies between documented specifications and implemented behavior.
- Ability to create and maintain API references, developer documentation, software integration guides, configuration instructions, and release notes.
- Strong information architecture skills, including organizing technical content for discoverability, usability, maintainability, and efficient navigation.
- Excellent editorial judgment, including the ability to determine the appropriate level of technical detail, remove unnecessary information, and defend content decisions.
- Ability to conduct effective technical interviews with engineers and product managers, ask detailed follow-up questions, and extract complete and accurate implementation information.
- Ability to establish documentation standards, reusable content structures, technical writing style guides, and collaborative review and publishing workflows.
- Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making skills, with the ability to use available evidence to guide documentation priorities and improvements.
- Ability to manage ambiguity, independently resolve documentation challenges, maintain focused ownership, and execute efficiently in an early-stage startup environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience documenting cybersecurity products or security operations workflows, particularly those involving Security Operations Centers (SOCs).
- Familiarity with Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR), identity systems, and cloud security data sources.
- Experience creating documentation for artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning (ML) products, including explanations of model behavior, supporting evidence, uncertainty, and functional limitations for non-specialist users.
- Experience working at Series A–C startups, particularly as the first or sole technical documentation specialist responsible for establishing documentation practices and infrastructure.
- Experience using documentation analytics and technical support ticket data to identify content gaps, prioritize documentation updates, and improve self-service resources.
- Familiarity with structured authoring methodologies, reusable content components, and content reuse systems.
