About the Role
This opportunity is for a Communications Specialist with strong experience in political communications, media relations, social media strategy, public-facing messaging, and client advisory work. The role supports a mission-driven digital and communications environment serving political campaigns, PACs, advocacy organizations, nonprofits, and other change-focused clients.
The Communications Specialist will help develop and execute strategic communications initiatives, prepare candidates and organizational leaders for public appearances, create persuasive written materials, coordinate media opportunities, and support rapid-response and crisis communications. This position offers a high level of independence in day-to-day work while remaining closely connected to a larger communications team.
What You’ll Do
- Work with the communications team to develop and execute strategic communications plans tailored to client goals, audiences, and campaign priorities.
- Develop social media strategies and manage social media channels for client communications.
- Work with clients to develop and execute social media and nontraditional media plans.
- Contribute to media preparation for candidates and organizational leaders, including interviews, debates, speeches, and other public appearances.
- Write compelling external communications materials, including press releases, talking points, op-eds, and related content.
- Pitch and shape stories with reporters and influencers to secure media coverage and placements.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with reporters, influencers, and other media contacts.
- Coordinate client media engagements and help ensure communications opportunities are handled smoothly.
- Support crisis communications and rapid-response messaging when urgent issues arise.
- Plan and execute press events, including press conferences and media roundtables.
- Support client internal communications staff in carrying out communications projects.
- Monitor and analyze media coverage to identify opportunities to refine, strengthen, and amplify messaging.
- Collaborate with advertising, creative, and digital teams to maximize communications and digital opportunities.
- Help maintain message consistency across communications, advertising, creative, and digital channels.
- Serve as a trusted communications advisor to clients while balancing multiple priorities and deadlines.
Qualifications
- Passion for mission-driven causes and public-interest work.
- 3–5 years of experience in political communications.
- At least one campaign cycle of experience in a dedicated communications role.
- Strong writing skills across a wide range of political communications formats.
- Experience writing long-form blog posts, op-eds, concise talking points, and effective social media copy.
- Proven experience successfully pitching stories to media outlets and/or securing placements with influencers.
- Ability to craft persuasive messaging for different platforms, audiences, and communications goals.
- Ability to adapt communication strategies based on audience, platform, timing, and client priorities.
- Strong strategic thinking skills and sound political instincts.
- Ability to respond effectively under pressure, including during rapid-response or crisis communications situations.
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
- Experience managing multiple projects, deadlines, and client priorities at the same time.
- Experience developing social media strategies and content across various platforms.
- Strong client-service mindset and willingness to go the extra mile for client needs.
- Ability to work as part of a collaborative team and support client work beyond standard business hours when required.
