About the Role

The Vertical Video Producer will play an important role in producing short-form, news-driven vertical videos that inform, engage, and mobilize audiences. This role is responsible for pitching, researching, scripting, producing, and helping shape vertical video coverage for platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts.

This position is well suited for an experienced reporter and video producer with strong storytelling instincts, strong source-building skills, on-camera confidence, and the ability to create compelling video moments with substance. The role requires self-sufficiency, collaboration, clear communication, strong writing skills, deadline discipline, and an interest in policy debates, labor issues, economic justice, and audience growth.

What You’ll Do

• Pitch, produce, and script short original videos under three minutes for Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts.
• Create vertical videos that engage and mobilize viewers around timely news moments.
• Get into the field to document strikes, union drives, protests, community uprisings, and other actions that confront power directly and support editorial goals.
• Pitch, research, write, and host short, news-driven direct-to-camera videos for vertical video platforms.
• Identify interview subjects for video stories and field coverage.
• Write interview questions, shot lists, and scripts for video production.
• Record voiceover or shoot direct-to-camera segments as needed.
• Review videos and provide clear feedback to editors.
• Develop and maintain relationships with sources.
• Participate in meetings and collaborate with other members of the video team.
• Stay current on major social media platforms and apply best practices for each platform.
• Receive assignments from supervisors and colleagues and act on them promptly.
• Manage multiple projects at the same time while meeting expected deadlines.
• Maintain a high standard of work in a nimble, fast-paced environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in journalism, video production, or social media content creation.
• Excellent scriptwriting, producing, storytelling, and collaboration skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and experience working on camera.
• Existing source relationships with policy experts, labor leaders, advocacy organizations, or other potential sources for leads and news stories.
• Strong editorial judgment and a clear understanding of journalistic practices and ethics.
• Experience working within a fast-paced news cycle.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet hard deadlines.
• Proven ability to grow audiences on social media is a plus, especially on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
• Passion for and substantial knowledge of national politics and economic justice issues.
• Availability to work full-time hours.
• Ability to succeed in a remote, work-from-home environment.
• Proficiency with Adobe Premiere is a plus.
• Experience using in-platform editing tools on TikTok and Instagram is a plus.
• Experience managing interns or fellows is a plus.
• Experience producing and scripting YouTube content is strongly desired.
