About the Role
This Financial Controller role is a senior finance and accounting leadership position responsible for protecting the financial integrity of the organization, supporting sound decision-making, and ensuring accurate financial operations across departments.
The role oversees financial reporting, accounting operations, financial systems, payroll, taxation, compliance, audits, internal controls, and accounting team leadership. This position also supports department leaders with financial analysis, proper transaction execution, and effective use of financial systems.
What You’ll Do
Financial Reporting and Accounting
- Oversee accounting, payables, financial system controls, payroll, and taxation functions.
- Establish operating policies and procedures that affect accounting and finance department units.
- Interpret, execute, and recommend modifications to accounting and finance policies.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of monthly and annual financial statements, including the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement.
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and financial systems.
- Analyze financial information related to assets and liabilities.
- Prepare appropriate accounting entries to ensure the accuracy of the organization’s current financial position.
- Provide accounting and financial systems support to departments across the organization.
- Support timely statutory financial reporting for audit requirements.
Compliance and Regulatory Reporting
- Lead the preparation and timely filing of the IRS Form 990 return.
- Lead the preparation and timely filing of annual audited financial statements.
- Oversee accurate and timely payroll processing, including tax filings and regulatory compliance.
- Support fiscal discipline in operating and capital spending across departments.
- Help safeguard organizational assets through effective financial controls and reporting discipline.
Leadership and Business Partnership
- Serve as a key advisor to the CFO on accounting treatments, sales tax, and compliance matters.
- Partner with department leaders to support financial decision-making.
- Help departments use NetSuite financial systems efficiently and accurately.
- Lead, mentor, and develop members of the accounting team.
- Apply accounting principles to audited financial information.
- Ensure accounting systems, processes, and controls are in place, properly documented, and working effectively.
- Provide actionable financial insights to support organizational initiatives.
- Independently assume responsibility for the overall needs of the Accounting Department.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or equivalent experience.
- 12 or more years of related accounting or finance experience.
- Prior Controller experience is preferred.
- 3 to 5+ years of progressive experience in a management-level role.
- Working knowledge of standard accounting operating procedures and principles, including GAAP.
- Knowledge of internal controls and risk management.
- Knowledge of, or willingness to develop deep knowledge of, federal tax guidelines and tax laws as they relate to not-for-profit organizations.
- Experience with Microsoft Office, including Word and Outlook.
- High proficiency with advanced Excel.
- Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning systems administration, such as NetSuite.
- Excellent written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work proactively and solve problems independently.
- Ability to work effectively as a collaborative team player.
- Ability to take ownership of the overall needs of the Accounting Department.
- CPA is preferred, but significant practical experience may also be considered.
