About the Role
The Senior Accountant will lead core accounting activities that support accurate financial reporting and strong financial controls. Key responsibilities include general ledger accounting, monthly and year-end close, financial statement preparation, project and contract accounting, account reconciliations, oversight of accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll accounting, and support for audits and compliance activities.
This role works closely with finance leadership to resolve complex accounting issues, strengthen internal controls, improve accounting systems and reporting workflows, and provide reliable financial information for organizational decision-making. The position requires strong GAAP knowledge, analytical judgment, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently in a remote environment.
What You'll Do
- Lead general ledger accounting activities and support accurate, timely monthly and year-end close processes.
- Prepare financial statements, reports, and financial analysis for organizational decision-making.
- Prepare journal entries and complete account reconciliations while maintaining accurate general ledger records.
- Support project and contract accounting, including financial tracking and reporting activities.
- Review and support accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll accounting processes.
- Apply revenue recognition principles and help ensure accounting treatment remains consistent with GAAP.
- Support annual financial statement audits by preparing documentation, schedules, and other requested information.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls, segregation of duties, and fraud-prevention practices.
- Research and resolve complex accounting issues independently.
- Improve, automate, and streamline accounting systems, processes, and reporting workflows.
- Work cross-functionally with project managers and non-financial staff to communicate financial information clearly and effectively.
Qualifications
Required Experience
- At least 5 years of progressively responsible general accounting experience.
- Demonstrated experience with month-end close, financial statement preparation, account reconciliations, journal entries, and general ledger accounting.
- Experience reviewing and supporting accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll accounting processes.
- Experience managing multiple priorities and deadlines while working independently in a remote environment.
Required Skills
- Strong working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Solid understanding of revenue recognition principles.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills with the ability to independently research and resolve complex accounting issues.
- Strong understanding of internal controls, segregation of duties, and fraud-prevention practices.
- Excellent attention to detail and a consistent commitment to financial accuracy.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
Education & Certifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in nonprofit, project-based, grant-funded, or government-contract accounting environments.
- Experience supporting annual financial statement audits.
- Experience using Sage Intacct.
- Experience improving, automating, or streamlining accounting processes and reporting workflows.
- Experience working with project managers and non-financial staff to communicate financial information effectively.
