About the Role

This opportunity is for a Senior Software Engineer, Optimizer responsible for designing, building, and maintaining core optimization technology and the full-stack, data-intensive systems that support it. The role leads challenging technical projects across optimization algorithms, model-builders, backend services, asynchronous job orchestration, machine learning, and generative AI.

The position also owns key aspects of production readiness and scale, including testing, observability, experiments, troubleshooting, and limited on-call support. You will partner with Product, provide technical leadership across critical areas of the stack, mentor junior engineers, and help turn complex scheduling requirements into reliable, scalable software.

What You'll Do

• Partner with Product to identify, define, and refine improvements to core optimization algorithms, model-builders, and the full-stack job orchestration framework.
• Research, recommend, and implement extensions to optimization technology, including the use of generative AI and machine learning to improve accuracy, speed, and accessibility.
• Lead major technical projects and initiatives while supporting the broader product squad in meeting delivery goals.
• Define and clarify ambiguous technical opportunities, establish direction, and help translate them into executable engineering work.
• Provide technical leadership across key areas of the optimizer technology stack and contribute to engineering decisions beyond the immediate product squad.
• Apply strong communication, collaboration, and project management practices to support timely, high-quality software delivery.
• Troubleshoot customer issues and deliver timely technical resolutions that support a reliable scheduling experience.
• Participate in limited on-call responsibilities as needed.
• Establish and improve testing and observability practices for production optimization systems.
• Run data-driven experiments to inform decisions about core optimization technology.
• Mentor and support junior engineers while promoting collaborative problem-solving and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

Required Experience

• 4+ years of software development experience with a demonstrated record of shipping customer-facing value and contributing across the technology stack as needed.
• Proven experience driving software delivery for complex technical projects, including partnering with Product stakeholders, making critical decisions, defining project roadmaps and work tasks, and presenting outcomes to external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to learn complex product requirements and challenging technical domains quickly and make meaningful engineering contributions.
• Experience developing and maintaining scalable web applications, implementing unit and integration tests, and working with CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience working effectively in a fast-moving startup environment with significant ownership, self-direction, and a focus on rapid delivery and learning.

Required Skills

• Deep knowledge in at least some of the following areas, combined with strong interest and ability to learn the others: linear optimization modeling and solvers, machine learning-intensive application stacks, generative AI product and infrastructure stacks, backend APIs, and asynchronous task development.
• Ability to contribute across other critical parts of the technology stack when needed, including frontend engineering, cloud infrastructure, and data engineering.
• Strong technical problem-solving skills for complex optimization, full-stack, and data-intensive systems.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills in cross-functional engineering environments.
• Commitment to continuous improvement through code reviews, pairing, and collaborative problem-solving.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in education technology is a plus but not required.

Work Conditions

• This is a fully remote role within the United States.
• Candidates based in New York or Boston are preferred, but these locations are not required.
