This hands-on position combines ownership of multi-state compliance, employee relations, payroll, benefits, and performance management with direct execution of HR processes.
The role works directly with the CEO, COO, managers, employees, outside employment counsel, payroll providers, and benefits partners. The scope includes a remote U.S. workforce across multiple states and a large international workforce. Success requires independent judgment, practical HR expertise, and the ability to build systems from scratch while supporting continued hiring and balancing employee experience with business needs.
What You'll Do
- Build and manage the HR function, establishing scalable policies, processes, and operational infrastructure while handling day-to-day execution.
- Own multi-state HR compliance for the remote U.S. workforce, covering employee classification, state-specific requirements, workers' compensation, unemployment, leave, and employment documentation.
- Manage onboarding and offboarding from accepted offer through termination, including I-9s, Rippling setup, payroll enrollment, equipment coordination, employee files, and separation paperwork.
- Act as the primary HR resource for employees and managers, addressing employee relations, performance issues, performance improvement plans (PIPs), written warnings, complaints, and sensitive workplace situations.
- Lead termination processes with leadership and involve outside employment counsel when needed.
- Oversee payroll administration in Rippling, including new hires, terminations, salary changes, bonuses, deductions, corrections, and payroll accuracy.
- Evaluate and help implement the next stage of the benefits program, including health insurance, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, parental leave, and retirement benefits.
- Partner with leadership on compensation, raises, promotions, bonus structures, job levels, and compensation benchmarking.
- Identify HR risks early and work directly with employment counsel when legal guidance or escalation is needed.
