About the Role

This Senior Backend Engineer position focuses on designing, developing, and maintaining reliable backend systems, production-grade RESTful APIs, microservices, and integrations with external data providers. Key responsibilities include building fault-tolerant background processing pipelines, improving application performance, and making architectural decisions that support scalability and long-term maintainability.

The role requires advanced expertise in Node.js, TypeScript, JavaScript, relational databases, and asynchronous processing. The engineer will work with technologies including NestJS, PostgreSQL, TypeORM, RabbitMQ, and Redis while translating complex requirements into system designs and data models. Additional responsibilities include investigating production incidents, collaborating with clients and engineering colleagues, and mentoring junior and mid-level engineers.

What You'll Do

• Design, build, and maintain robust, fault-tolerant integrations with third-party APIs, including services with limited, incomplete, or poorly documented interfaces.
• Develop reliable background processing pipelines and asynchronous workflows that support business-critical application operations.
• Build and maintain high-performance backend microservices and production-ready APIs following RESTful design principles for use by paying clients.
• Write comprehensive unit tests and integration tests to validate functionality, maintain code quality, and improve system reliability.
• Investigate complex client-reported issues, production incidents, and service disruptions through detailed technical analysis and troubleshooting.
• Translate high-level requirements into system architecture changes, application designs, and new data models through collaboration with clients and engineering team members.
• Evaluate architectural alternatives and lower-level technical design decisions within existing applications, considering their advantages, limitations, and long-term implications.
• Independently make system design and implementation decisions that support maintainability, adaptability, and resilience to changing requirements.
• Contribute to reliable application performance and production service quality while maintaining a strong focus on client satisfaction.
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers, provide technical guidance, and reinforce accountability for engineering deliverables and quality standards.

Qualifications

Required Experience

• At least 7 years of full-time professional experience in software engineering.
• Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining backend applications, production APIs, and microservices.
• Proven track record of integrating applications with external APIs and third-party services.
• Experience designing, implementing, and operating background job processing systems, queues, and asynchronous workflows.
• History of scaling applications and optimizing performance to accommodate rapid growth.
• Experience independently evaluating technical designs and making architectural decisions within existing software applications.

Required Skills

• Strong proficiency in TypeScript and JavaScript for backend application development.
• Deep understanding of Node.js runtime behavior, including event loops, streams, events, and asynchronous execution.
• Advanced knowledge of relational databases, including database schema design, query design, implementation, optimization, and object-relational mapping (ORM).
• Ability to design, build, and optimize high-performance, fault-tolerant microservices.
• Strong understanding of RESTful API development, external service integrations, and production application reliability.
• Practical expertise with background processing, job queues, and reliable asynchronous task execution.
• Ability to translate requirements into technical architecture, application design changes, and effective data models.
• Strong technical troubleshooting and analytical skills for investigating complex application issues and production service disruptions.
• Ability to work autonomously, evaluate architectural trade-offs, and make maintainable system design decisions.
• Ability to mentor less-experienced engineers and maintain accountability for technical quality and engineering outcomes.
