About the Role
This Software Engineer position focuses on developing, maintaining, and improving web applications and digital products used by hundreds of thousands of people. The role involves full-stack development, implementing product features, resolving technical issues, improving system reliability, and supporting engineering infrastructure. Working as an individual contributor within a small engineering team, the successful candidate will independently deliver production-ready solutions while collaborating with product managers, designers, and other stakeholders.
The technology stack includes TypeScript, Node.js, React, Next.js, Postgres, and Elasticsearch, with applications hosted on Render, Vercel, and Cloudflare. Product analytics and data processing use PostHog. Responsibilities span frontend and backend engineering, database management, DevOps, testing, third-party integrations, and technical improvements across multiple web products. The position reports to the Head of Digital Product.
What You'll Do
Software Development and Product Engineering
- Design, develop, implement, and maintain full-stack functionality across multiple production web applications and digital products.
- Build new product features, resolve bugs, and deliver reliable, maintainable production code that supports long-term application performance.
- Contribute to migrating an established online community forum to Next.js, supporting architectural improvements and long-term maintainability.
- Develop and improve online community platforms, opportunity listings, educational course applications, and other digital services.
- Collaborate with product managers, product designers, and technical stakeholders to translate requirements into practical software solutions.
- Work directly with non-technical teams to identify technical gaps, implement improvements, and develop internal tools that support business processes.
- Explore opportunities to integrate AI technologies into digital products, internal tools, and operational workflows, including improvements to grantmaking and related processes.
- Support the development of new virtual products and technical capabilities for online events.
- Write appropriate automated tests for new functionality and address high-priority production issues when they arise.
- Evaluate product performance using analytics and relevant metrics, ensuring data is accessible and useful for non-technical stakeholders.
- Contribute to improvements in analytics systems and data infrastructure to support product evaluation and informed decision-making.
- Proactively identify opportunities to improve user experiences, application functionality, and overall product effectiveness.
Engineering Infrastructure and DevOps
- Maintain and improve application infrastructure, deployment processes, monitoring systems, and testing practices.
- Share responsibility for DevOps operations, helping ensure production websites remain fast, reliable, and available.
- Participate in a weekly on-call rotation, triaging incoming technical requests and responding to urgent production incidents.
- Identify developer experience (DX) challenges and implement technical solutions that improve engineering efficiency.
- Evaluate technologies, infrastructure services, and software tools based on technical suitability, cost-effectiveness, and long-term maintainability.
- Use AI coding agents where appropriate to accelerate engineering work while validating generated code and maintaining sound software architecture.
Qualifications
Required Experience
- Solid professional experience in full-stack software engineering, including independently building, deploying, and maintaining production web applications.
- Ability to develop and maintain a product comparable to an online discussion forum, covering frontend development, backend services, databases, DevOps, and third-party integrations.
- Experience independently managing technical implementation from initial requirements through production delivery.
- Experience working with product managers or other non-technical stakeholders to translate product ideas into functional software.
Required Skills
- Strong practical knowledge of TypeScript, React, and Postgres, with the ability to quickly learn additional technologies used across the engineering stack.
- Ability to develop and maintain frontend interfaces, backend application logic, database functionality, and third-party integrations.
- Ability to write reliable, maintainable production code and implement appropriate automated tests for new functionality.
- Understanding of software architecture and the ability to explain technical decisions, tradeoffs, and implementation approaches clearly.
- Ability to independently own technical projects, resolve engineering challenges, and acquire new technical skills when necessary.
- Experience using AI coding agents, including evaluating their limitations, verifying generated code, and applying sound engineering judgment to maintain code quality and architecture.
- Ability to use analytics data and product metrics to evaluate software improvements, measure outcomes, and guide further development.
- Strong problem-solving and prioritization skills, with an emphasis on delivering meaningful improvements rather than simply completing features.
- Ability to work effectively within a small engineering team while coordinating technical work with non-technical product stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with DevOps practices, including provisioning and maintaining servers and databases supporting websites with hundreds of thousands of active users.
- Experience mitigating adversarial bot traffic and implementing safe, effective caching configurations.
