About the Role
This opportunity is for a Full-Stack Software Engineer to build and maintain an open-source assessment platform used in higher education. The role provides broad ownership across Node.js and TypeScript backend development, PostgreSQL, React, tRPC, TanStack, AWS, Redis, and Docker, with responsibility for taking product features from initial concept through architecture, implementation, iteration, and production rollout.
The position also involves working directly with educators and teaching assistants to translate academic needs into reliable user-facing features. The product includes practical AI capabilities such as LLM agents for content creation and vision-language models for grading student work, with AI development tools used as part of the engineering workflow.
What You'll Do
- Build and maintain full-stack systems using a Node.js and TypeScript backend, PostgreSQL, and React.
- Develop product functionality using technologies including tRPC, TanStack, Redis, AWS, and Docker.
- Design and own features end to end, from initial concept and architecture through implementation, iteration, and production rollout.
- Work within a small engineering team to architect and continuously improve product features.
- Collaborate directly with educators and teaching assistants to understand academic requirements and translate them into high-quality product functionality.
- Contribute to practical, user-facing AI capabilities that support educational workflows.
- Use modern AI development tools such as Claude and Codex as part of the software development process.
- Take meaningful ownership of projects from the initial idea through production delivery.
Qualifications
Required Experience
- Experience with full-stack web development.
- Experience owning software projects or features from initial idea through production.
- Experience working directly with users to understand requirements and improve product functionality.
Required Skills
- Ability to contribute across frontend, backend, and database layers of modern web applications.
- Ability to work with a technology stack centered on Node.js, TypeScript, PostgreSQL, and React.
- Ability to learn quickly and contribute effectively within a small, early-stage engineering environment.
- Interest in using modern AI development tools, including Claude and Codex, to support software engineering work.
- Strong interest in engineering and building technology for education.
